Lower Village Road Safety & Sidewalk Project

The Lower Village Pedestrian Access & Roadway Safety Project’s goal is to address pedestrian access and roadway safety in the Lower Village. The combination of increased vehicle traffic and increased pedestrian and bicycle activity means the potential for danger conflict is growing. A joint working committee of the Planning Commission, Selectboard and area residents, restarted planning after being put on hold during the pandemic. The Committee worked with Chittenden Regional Planning Commission and the engineering consultant firm Stantec to develop alternative designs to improve safety.

In 2024 the Town received a multi-year grant to support design and construction of the project. The project includes the reconfiguration of the Main Road intersections with East and Bridge Streets, construction of sidewalks along the Main Road generally between Raven Ridge and Beaudry’s Store and the north end of East Street, an enclosed drainage system, and reclaiming and re-paving the Main Road in the project area.

An advisory committee was appointed by the Selectboard in 2025 to assist with public outreach and implementing a successful project.
