Justices of the Peace are elected for two-year terms.
Huntington elects seven Justices of the Peace during the November elections that are held in the even years.
JPs are members of the Board of Civil Authority (BCA). Their primary duties, as members of the BCA, are
- certifying elections;
- tax assessment grievances (late spring into summer);
- abatement of property taxes owed (meetings held as needed);
- working at elections – as elections staff or counting ballot and cleaning up
JPs also have the ability to perform marriages conducted within the State of Vermont. This is a benefit to being a JP and is not the primary reason to do this.
